The Romani (also Romany, Romanies, Romanis, Roma or Roms; exonym: Gypsies; Romani: Romane or Rromane, depending on the dialect) are an ethnic group living mostly in Europe, who trace their origins to medieval India.

The Romani are widely dispersed with their largest concentrated populations in Europe, especially the Roma of Central and Eastern Europe and Anatolia, followed by the Iberian Kale in Southwestern Europe and Southern France, with more recent diaspora populations in the Americas and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of the world.

Their Romani language is divided into several dialects, which add up to an estimated number of speakers larger than two million. The total number of Romani people is at least twice as large (several times as large according to high estimates), and many Romani are native speakers of the language current in their country of residence, or of mixed languages combining the two.

I want to become fluent in Romani (the Gypsy language that is, not Romanian)?
Q. I know a very little bit, but haven't been successful in learning more on my own. Part of the problem I have been running into is that even common words sometimes have more than one meaning. I have already talked to my university about offering it as a course and hiring a grad students from Manchester to teach it. I totally got shot down, but yet they think that Gaelic and Ojibwe are important languages for people to learn. There really aren't that many books on the language out there that I am aware of and the one that I bought contradicted much of what I thought was correct. The only person that I know of that speaks really good Romani is in jail right now & I really don't want to go around her. I am really desperate to learn, but I… [cont.]

A. Indeed, you'll find nowhere many books in Rromani - the language is a spoken one, not written, they have no literature, no science, no poetry in their language - and also differs a lot from country to country. Gypsies borrowed plenty of words from the language of the nation where they live, and these borrowings are not universal. The only way is to find another Gypsy to teach you the basic
