Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.

Etymologically, the word education is derived from educare (Latin) "bring up", which is related to educere "bring out", "bring forth what is within", "bring out potential" and ducere, "to lead".

Teachers in educational institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and history. This process is sometimes called schooling when referring to the education of teaching only a certain subject, usually as professors at institutions of higher learning. There is also education in fields for those who want specific vocational skills, such as those required to be a pilot. In addition there is an array of education possible at the informal level, such as in museums and libraries, with the Internet and in life experience. Many non-traditional education options are now available and continue to evolve.

A right to education has been created and recognized by some jurisdictions: since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. At world level, the United Nations' International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this right under its Article 13.

Question for socialists only: How much education should citizens get for free?
Q. Question for socialists only: How much education should citizens get for free? I can't find the data, but I know I saw a chart showing how countries with low education are very poor and countries with lots of education are much better off financially. So it stands to logic if a country were to give every citizen a free PhD quality education it's per capita income would be highest in the world. Would you support this? Why or why not?

How will executive education change in the next 5-10 years?
Q. Will office workers and executives of the future sit in classrooms to get their executive education? Will it be delivered through Second Life or another virtual world? What role will Web 2.0 technologies play in executive education? Will we get our training through mobile phones? Will we train each other, through Wikis and similar technologies? If you are 20-25 years old now, or have experience of this, please let me know what you think about this. Thanks!

What purposes does education serve other than providing greater economic rewards?
Q. Why do you and the people of your community need to have a good education? And what purposes does education serve other than providing greater economic rewards, such as enabling people to get better paying jobs? This is for an essay. Would love some ideas. I honestly don't know where to start. Help please!

A. You don't need an education unless you plan to do something that requires it. The reason we go to school is because if parents didn't send their children to school they'd be fined; if they refuse to pay the fine, people in blue costumes with guns will come to take their children away and throw them in a cage; if they resist this aggression they'll be shot. The same will happen to anyone who refuses to pay for this "service" regardless of whether they have children attending school or not.
