Poland /ˈpəʊlənd/ (help·info) (Polish: Polska), officially the Republic of Poland (Rzeczpospolita Polska), is a country in Central Europe bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania to the east; and the Baltic Sea and Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian exclave, to the north. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square kilometres (120,726 sq mi), making it the 69th largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Europe. Poland has a population of over 38 million people, which makes it the 34th most populous country in the world and the sixth most populous member of the European Union.

The establishment of a Polish state is often identified with the adoption of Christianity by its ruler Mieszko I in 966, when the state covered territory similar to that of present-day Poland. The Kingdom of Poland was formed in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a long association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin, forming the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth collapsed in 1795, and Poland's territory was partitioned among the Kingdom of Prussia, the Russian Empire, and Austria. Poland regained its independence as the Second Polish Republic in 1918, after World War I, but two decades later it was occupied by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union at the outbreak of World War II in September 1939. Poland lost over six million citizens in the war and emerged several years later as the People's Republic of Poland under Soviet influence.

During the Revolutions of 1989, communist rule was overthrown, and soon after Poland became what is constitutionally known as the "Third Polish Republic". Poland is a unitary state, made up of sixteen Voivodeships (Polish: Województwo), Poland is a member of the European Union, NATO, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The president of Poland dies in a plane crash along with 96 others. What if this would happen in US?
Q. Many important people of Poland died: president and his wife, Chief of the Polish Air Force, the President of the National Bank of Poland, Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Commander of the Polish Land Forces... All the 96 people in the plane died. It's not impossible that the same would happen in US? What if that many important people in US would die? Would the US government go into crisis?

A. I'm Polish and its a huge tragedy for all of us. However, not being one of the most powerful countries in the world, other countries such as Australia haven't reported heaps about Poland's tragedy. If it happened in the US, it would probably have almost the same amount of coverage as the death of Princess Diana or something...

What is the best way to get from London to northern Poland without flying ?
Q. I am accompanying an 85-year old man back to Poland to see an old friend. He's in excellent health but he hates flying. I am trying to establish the best way for us to get there - car (if so which routes?), ferry (likewise), train, a mixture of these, etc. Accommodation suggestions or approaches would also be very welcome. The final destination is a town about 160km south of Gdansk. Many thanks for any and all suggestions!

A. This story is so familiar to me that it's unbelievable. I live in Mazury about 180 km's south of Gdansk. My mother is 80 years of age though in poor health. We eventually got her on a plane with the help of a whiskey or two. It was a tough trip for her and she was tired out when she got here. Your 85 year old may be in good health, but having done the trip by car several times myself at the age of 40, I think It may be too much for the old man. Don't get me wrong here a lot depends how you go about it. My first trip here by car at the age of 40 was done none stop from wales to lodz 24 hours in total. wales to Dover to callais then Belgium, Holland and Germany, crossing the border into Poland at Swiecko. I have done the trip seven times in… [cont.]
