Do the Roma (Gypsy) people have a "homeland" like the Jews or Armenians or other ethnic groups?
Q. Like, are the Roma people nomadic because they like that lifestyle? Or are they eventually trying to get somewhere geographically?

A. Thank you or using the proper term! *blows kiss* No, they are not trying to get anywhere geographically. Genetically, we're from the Indian subcontinent, but there is no 'promised land,' or anything like that. By and large the culture is simply nomadic. It isn't so much that they like the lifestyle, so much as settling down in one place makes it harder to keep marime law about not marrying out, and what is and is not allowed in the home, and such. settling also goes against the nature. Most often compare it to water. If Rom stay in one place, they believe the spirit and the energy goes stagnant and causes disease and problems. Also, because the culture and laws are so different it fosters persecution. There are Roma who settle down, but… [cont.]

I have lived in Hungary where there is a large population of Roma. There are also many that live in the US. My son married a girl that was half Gypsy and allot of trouble and lying was going on with her. Other then her, I don't personally know many Gypsy people. There is a man that lives in our apt. house in Budapest that is a Gypsy and he keeps to himself and teaches violin out of his flat. not much trouble with him. Roma People (Gypsies) ?
Q. Why do the Roma People move around the world?
Asked by Bryce B - Wed Nov 4 22:21:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Gypsies started moving all around the world when their beliefs started to be persecuted. They'd be run off from place to place to place, constantly moving to avoid violence. Then, as the world become more accepting of the Gypsies, a few of the Roma settled down but the majority kept moving from place to place because it was tradition at that point.

How are colored people, of all backgrounds, treated in the Czech Republic? Rural and Urban?
Q. I heard that except for Prague, and sometimes Prague as well though, there is much racism sometimes attacks towards non whites. Usually the Roma people, but I heard it also happens to others.

A. It depends on who you will meet. Some Czechs are racists some Czechs not. It's the same situation like anywhere in the world. Czechs outside Prague and Brno can stare at colored people but not because they're racists but because they're not used to see them.

A. Hello, Gypsies? Because they have had their own culture and identity, kept to themselves and have been free wheeling travelers and over the centuries they got stereotyped and were perceived as thieves, liars, swindlers and social misfits unable or willing to integrate into mainstream society. Sometimes there are those that do a good job in helping to live up to the stereotype hence they are all painted with the same brush. All civilized people still have their prejudices I'm afraid. A. It's very doubtful that will happen. This is a scare tactic that the Jobbik uses to convince people that the Romas will take over Hungary. They are still a minority in Hungary, but are treated terribly by many Hungarians. It is a shame, I love Hungary, and I have spent a lot of my life there, but the treatment of Romas in Hungary is a dark patch.

A. No, we're NOT Egyptian, and never were. That's just silly. I don't know what kind of crackerjack box research harpertara has been doing, but it's the polar opposite of correct or informed. "Gypsy" is NOT short for "Egyptian", and the word "gypsy" is actually quite derogatory. We NEVER settled in Romania. In fact we never settled at all. Actually, we really came from northern India. We're not the same as Romanians, in fact we're not even very fond of them. "Rom" is NOT a play on the word "Roam", nor is "Roma". I can't believe this person is a top contributor.

Why would you consider that the Roma people are being discriminated?
Q. For starters, they have the same opportunities to go to school as everyone else. Even when it comes to employment. But they CHOOSE not to. Don't you think that by offering them special treatment the other ethnic groups will feel discriminated? Shouldn't we strive for equall chances? It is obvious we are not equall and that not everyone is meant for higher education. So why should the rest of Europe try to make an effort to suit the needs of the Roma when they are rejecting every chance they get to make an ernest living? I meant we are not equall in our abilities. I didn't mean as ethnic groups, just in general.

A. They have chosen a lifestyle that causes others to be suspicious of them and have, traditionally, followed that lifestyle for a lengthy period of time. They even prey on each other. Is it discrimination to try to protect your assets from being misappropriated by worthless criminals? I think not!
